Invitado Vince Publicado 5 de Abril del 2007 Publicado 5 de Abril del 2007 By Jeremy Parish 04/03/2007 10 years ago, Lara Croft jumped, climbed and blasted her way into our hearts -- sorry, what? 11 years ago? Well, okay, so Tomb Raider: Anniversary is arriving a little late to be relevant to any kind of anniversary that actually matters. But the underlying concept of the game is so good that it's hard to be critical. What's the concept? Take the original and best Tomb Raider (no, sorry, Tomb Raider II wasn't quite as good as its predecessor) and rework it with the vastly refined controls and enhanced graphics of last year's Tomb Raider: Legend. It's hard to imagine such a sure-fire formula for success failing to satisfy...and if the first three levels are any indication, it's satisfying indeed. Legend was, by all accounts, made by a group of talented people who really and truly understood what about Tomb Raider has worked over the years and what is best left forgotten. Anniversary seals it: All the little elements that made the original so compelling have been preserved beautifully -- the way the levels gently nudge you along from puzzle to puzzle; the cold silence of the vast caverns; the sporadic hostile encounters that leave you straining your ears at every moment for hints of the next ambush; the way one "level" segues directly into the next, creating a powerful sense of continuity -- even with the total graphical overhaul. Still, this is no straight port. There's no question that Anniversary is based directly on the first Tomb Raider, but everything has been reworked to make use of the Legend engine. Boxy edges have been sanded down to resemble something more akin to real rock formations. Handholds and footholds have been rearranged to push the limits of Lara's expanded repertoire. New elements have been added, ranging from poles to stone perches to grappling points. Yes, Lara has her grappling wire from Legend. Good thing the world's ancient civilizations were thoughtful enough to install metal rings at strategic locations. While the fine details differ, the overall feel of the game is absolutely nostalgic. The structure and flow of the adventure -- at least in the first three levels -- are taken directly from the PS1 game. Veer left from the main path once you enter the caverns and you'll find a large medkit hidden in an alcove; pause to gun down bats before making leaps; and of course be careful of the collapsing wooden bridge where wolves lurk below. We didn't quite have time to make it to the dinosaur grotto, but everything to that point was spot-on, all the way down to the giant gear puzzle atop the waterfall. New situations have been inserted seamlessly into the quest as well, beginning at, well, the beginning. Where the original game began after a flurry of gunfire, the new version begins a bit earlier, with Lara trapped on a low ledge after her Sherpa guide's rope breaks. Players get a quick control tutorial and a taste of puzzle solving before the wolves attack and the familiar adventure begins. Since it's running on Legend's technology, Anniversary looks excellent -- backgrounds are detailed and varied despite the endless walls of stone, with gorgeous light and shadow effects. And while it's disappointing to know that Anniversary won't be made available in an Xbox 360 flavor, the PS2 version does support widescreen and progressive output for a semi-HD experience. Aside from some control and framerate issues (which should be resolved in due time), Anniversary is well on its way to being the defining example of how to remake a game: Old-school fundamentals with modern-day polish.
